Advantages of Trim Tabs

Trim tabs are removable lines attached to the trailing edge of an outer control surface of a boat or other water-bound vehicle, used to regulate the trim of the main controls, i.e. to counter hydro and air-acoustic forces acting on the vessel at sea or in the air. These lines are often adjustable and can be made to conform to varying wind conditions and / or the effects of sea spray. Some trim tabs also allow for "off-set" control of the trim. When the trim tab is activated the trailing end of the line is brought closer to the trailing edge of the control and the trim is further improved until it is the optimum level for the vessel.

Water trim tabs (and sometimes also referred to as "power trim tabs") can play a large part in controlling both the turning and speed of a water-bound vessel. Although trim tabs can be adjusted in a standard and generic manner, special consideration must be taken when using them to deal with uneven weight distribution in the hull. Unymmetrical hull shapes can create troublesome hydrostatic conditions that can greatly increase both the steering and turning friction. The amount of hydrostatic lift a water-bound vessel experiences can greatly affect the efficiency of the steering, the handling, and the overall operation of the vessel. In such circumstances it is vital that trim tabs and other similar devices be able to compensate for the unequal weight distribution and provide the necessary adjustment for optimal performance.

The concept of trim tabs is most easily illustrated with an example. If two vessels sailing parallel to each other, equipped with identical rudder and similar speed ratings, then when a large vessel is sailing in front of a smaller, lighter ship (let us call the craft being piloted by you) the larger ship will encounter a turn at the front of the craft due to the hydrodynamic effect of the larger ship. This large amount of vertical movement can be negated if the trim tab in your rudder system can be adjusted so that the ship in the rear of your craft is able to gain an advantage in lateral positioning relative to your own boat. This advantage is primarily gained by means of an optimized turning radius and the controlled effects of an increased or decreased turning radius by means of trim tab controls.

Let us now take this illustration one step further. If you are sailing along with a very large ship behind you and it suddenly starts to turn to port, your boat will be forced to port, regardless of whether or not you have any trim tab adjustments. In this case you have just experienced one of the major advantages of trim tabs. A properly functioning trim tab will minimize the amount of turning force that is transferred to either side of the hull and will, in this situation, allow your boat to free-turn more completely than it would have been able to if no adjustments had been made.

In addition to minimizing turning torque, trim tabs can help you to more easily control the overall lift of your vessel. The boat's overall lifting force is actually derived from the difference in weight distribution between the center of gravity and the transom. A large ship can have a large difference in weight distribution because it has a large island of high pressure inside its hull while a small ship will tend to have a smaller island of low pressure. Since the center of gravity is farther away from the boat's center of buoyancy, the boat will be less likely to roll in a way that increases its center of buoyancy, which results in more efficient turning. This efficiency result can also help reduce the chances of your bow wings encountering high dynamic forces as they are taken off of the wing and "pushed" by the wind.

The third advantage of trim tabs is that they can help prevent the occurrence of "wavy" wakes. This is an undesirable trait for many boaters, especially those who like to kayak and often find themselves "waking" on the surface of the lake. The most common cause of this phenomenon is shallow water, where the surface is not stable enough for the boat to remain still. The tops of the metal plates on the back end of the stern can "lobster out" in order to create a large wake. The introduction of trim tabs will help prevent this from happening, since the plates can be adjusted in width to keep the stern "flat" and minimize the amount of lopsided wakes.

The fourth advantage of trim tabs is the fact that they can provide the appearance of stability. On large boats with large bows, it can be difficult to visually note the exact positioning of the boat's stern in relation to the center of gravity of the vessel. This visual discrepancy can greatly increase the risk of running into others, particularly if you are exercising in or near other boats. By simply having the trim tab positioned in a position that allows you to see where your boat is in relation to the water, you can determine how stable it is.

The fifth advantage of trim tabs is that they can help you make your boat lighter. When you are trying to make your boat faster, you generally reduce your engine power and increase drag. By removing the weight of excess engine oil, the need for more fuel becomes alleviated. In the case of trim tabs, by reducing the amount of "wet" weight in your stern you will reduce engine power required to propel the boat to its maximum speed.
